The Gouda cartoons are the original designs for the stained-glass windows of the Sint-Janskerk in that city. They form a unique collection of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century drawings: nowhere else in the world have so many full-size working drawings been preserved, let alone in the church for which they were meant, with the matching windows also extant. This book contains descriptions and illustrations of all the cartoons, with essays about the draughtsmen and their working methods.
