In 1996 the board of Delft University of Technology decided to install a committee to embed Sustainable Development in the university and Leo Jansen was appointed as chair of this committee. This decision was made in a context of sustainability-orientated policies reflected in the Dutch national environment programs, and in the national research program Sustainable Technology Development. In the decade that followed, sustainability became a key challenge to which Delft University of Technology contributes.

Leo Jansen has been of key importance for that change. His enormous drive and energy remained unbroken, even when people made clear that they were feeling that sustainability was all nonsense or another hype they would survive.

In the honor of Leo Jansen, this book describes some of the changes that took place in Delft and some contributions that Delft makes to sustainability.
