The modern history of Cyprus has been indelibly marked by two years: 1974, when the Turkish invasion of the island took place; and 2004, when the Republic of Cyprus became a member of the EU. These two anniversaries prompted the publication of this collective volume, which examines various aspects of Cyprus’ journey over the past half-century.

In this context, the book includes chapters that focus on the political and legal dimensions of the Cyprus issue as it has developed as a result of the 1974 invasion and the continued occupation of the northern part of the island, on the measures taken to provide relief to people who were internally displaced by the invasion; on the involvement of the United Nations in efforts to resolve the Cyprus issue; on the position of the Republic of Cyprus in the modern international environment; and on the economic factors that have historically shaped and will continue to shape Cyprus’ future.

Distinguished university professors, researchers, and political actors offer a multi-thematic and in-depth analysis. The interdisciplinary approach that runs through the pages of the book provides a multifaceted depiction of the mosaic that composes the image of Cyprus today.

The creation of this volume was supported by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation Greece & Cyprus and the Wilfried Martens Centre for European Studies.
