Integrated coastal management is a worthwhile cause, but difficult in practice because it encompasses so many issues across many sectors. This requires coastal managers to have skills that combine approaches, insights, and knowledge of many disciplines. The challenge in educating coastal managers is to overcome disciplinary boundaries and construct a holistic vision that is rooted in the workplace.
This manual provides university teachers with a three module course to train professional coastal managers. As many students and teachers in this field are from the natural sciences, the focus is on embedding social science concepts and approaches into education for coastal management.
