This book depicts the variety of situations found in seven different cities. It shows that there are a number of local conditions and determinants whether or not participatory channels exist, and whether this provides the type of space for collaboration between different stakeholders and if this ultimately enables the formulation and implementation of pro-poor policies.

The main motivation to write this book is the wealth of knowledge that was generated about participatory processes in seven different cities in the world through the city auditing and process mapping research carried out by IHS. It makes the cases available to a wider audience.

IHS-Institute for Housing and Urban Development Studies, is an international centre of excellence associated with the Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR) and operating on a global scale that offers specialized post graduate education, training, advisory services and applied research in the field of urban management.

Cordaid forms together with Memisa, Mensen in Nood and Vastenaktie one of the biggest international development organisations.
